Up to one-third of cargo volume is delayed in transit hubs: Ocean Insights

Data from Ocean Insights shows that between a third and a fifth of the cargo was transported through most of the top container transit hubs when capacity and equipment shortages began to unfold.

Ocean Insights calculated shipping delays at the world's largest transit hub Singapore at 30.2% last month, down from 33.3% in August, but still significantly higher than 19, 2% in September 2019.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port saw 30.1% of freight delays in September, compared with 43% in August and Dubai's Jebel Ali port saw 31.8% of freight delays in the month. 9, compared with 34.9% in August. Although the improvement was seen between August and September, Ocean Insights expects freight delays will remain high in Q4 2020.

Josh Brazil, CEO of Ocean Insights said: "Container lines were taken by surprise by the surge in demand for shipments as coronavirus lockdowns were eased during the summer."

Transit schedules are clearly still significantly disrupted and in many ports, this is being exacerbated by the lack of equipment, increasing logistics disruptions and congestion and inefficiencies.

“As a result, carriers are frequently rolling cargo, which can result in significant delays and knock-on costs for customers, especially if they are not notified by the line in advance, which customers tell us is quite common".
