Transit Times Cut by Up to 14 Days: Maersk Reinstates MECL Service via Suez Canal

Ocean carrier Maersk has formally announced that its MECL service will return to the trans-Suez route via the Red Sea region. This decision comes on the heels of the successful transit of the mega-vessel Majestic Maersk, alongside structural changes previously implemented for the carrier's AE15 service.

Optimizing Transit Times

The Danish shipping line stated that this move marks another step in its phased return to utilizing the Suez Canal corridor, thereby restoring a faster and more efficient transport route connecting India, the Middle East, and the US East Coast.

The revised routing is expected to drastically improve transit times for shippers. Specifically:

●    Westbound leg: Shortened by an average of 7 days.

●    Eastbound leg: Shortened by an impressive average of up to 14 days.

Schedule Updates and the Revised Port Rotation

According to Maersk’s deployment schedule, the first vessels marking the return to the Red Sea route include:

●    First westbound voyage: Maersk Denver (voyage 627W).

●    First eastbound voyage: Maersk Chicago (voyage 624E).

As part of the restructuring process, Maersk will add an eastbound port call at Jeddah starting in August. Consequently, the updated eastbound port rotation will proceed through the following gateways: Charleston – Savannah – Houston – Norfolk – Newark – Tangier – Jeddah – Salalah – Mundra – Pipavav – Nhava Sheva.

Maintaining Contingency Plans

Despite resuming operations along this highly efficient route, Maersk emphasized that it will continue to closely monitor the security situation in the Middle East. The carrier also stressed that contingency plans remain fully prepared in the event that operational conditions require the service to be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope once again.
