Toward Net Zero: Hapag-Lloyd Expands Shore Power Usage at the Port of Hamburg

Hapag-Lloyd has entered into an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) to expand the use of shore power at the Port of Hamburg. The agreement marks another significant milestone in the German carrier's decarbonization strategy while supporting the broader green transformation of port operations.

Commitment to Expanding Shore Power Usage

Under the agreement, Hapag-Lloyd has committed to connecting its vessels to shore power facilities at all terminals within the Port of Hamburg where the necessary infrastructure is available and operationally feasible.

Using shore power enables vessels to switch off their onboard diesel generators while berthed and instead draw electricity from the local power grid. This significantly reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), sulfur oxides (SOₓ), particulate matter, as well as noise generated during port stays.

In practice, Hapag-Lloyd has already successfully connected two container vessels, Al Muraykh and Tihama, to shore power during recent calls at the Port of Hamburg. Both vessels are deployed on the NE2 service connecting Asia and Northern Europe.

Advancing Toward Net-Zero Emissions

Commenting on the company's sustainability strategy, Rolf Habben Jansen, Chief Executive Officer of Hapag-Lloyd, said: "Shore power is an important element on our path toward lower-emission vessel operations in ports and towards our goal of achieving net-zero fleet emissions by 2045."

He also highlighted the company's ongoing fleet modernization program: "All our newbuildings are already shore-power ready, and we are retrofitting suitable vessels in the existing fleet accordingly. Wherever the infrastructure is available and its use makes operational sense, we use shore power."

Expanding a Shore Power-Ready Fleet

According to Hapag-Lloyd, approximately 35% of its current fleet is already fully equipped to connect to shore power. This proportion is expected to continue increasing over the coming years as new vessels are delivered and the retrofit program for existing ships expands.

Greater adoption of shore power not only reduces emissions while vessels are alongside but also supports compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations across Europe and at major ports worldwide.

As the shipping industry accelerates its transition toward net-zero emissions, investments in shore power infrastructure and the capability of vessels to utilize these systems are becoming increasingly important. These initiatives enable shipping lines to reduce emissions during routine port operations while strengthening their ability to meet the evolving sustainability standards of the global maritime industry.
