Ship Recycling Activity Drops to More Than 50-Year Low as Global Fleet Faces Rapid Aging

The global ship recycling sector is navigating its most protracted lull in more than half a century, driving the average age of the world merchant fleet steadily upward. With charter markets and freight rates holding at buoyant levels, shipowners overwhelmingly prefer to keep vintage tonnage trading or cash out in the secondhand sale-and-purchase (S&P) market rather than commit assets to shipbreakers.
According to data from Clarksons Research, just 273 vessels totaling 5.5 million GT (approximately 8 million DWT) were committed for demolition during the first nine months of 2026. This represents a 13% decline from an already depressed baseline recorded over the same period in 2025, and trails the average recycling volumes of the 2000s and 2010s by a steep 60%.
Notably, for five consecutive years, annual ship demolition volume has accounted for less than 0.5% of total global fleet capacity. This ratio sits below levels witnessed during the 2006–2008 shipping super-cycle, marking the most extended demolition drought since the early 1970s.
An Accelerating Graying of the World Fleet
The prolonged freeze in demolition activity has catalyzed a massive accumulation of vintage tonnage on the water. More than 340 million GT of commercial shipping capacity is now over 20 years old - a staggering 90% surge over the past five years alone. This demographic now represents nearly 20% of the world merchant fleet, up sharply from roughly 12% in 2021.
Deeper generational cohorts highlight an equally concerning aging curve:
● Over 150 million GT consists of vessels operating beyond 25 years of age (a 75% increase over five years).
● Tonnage crossing the 30-year mark has reached an unprecedented peak of 68 million GT.
This trend is most acute across the tanker sector, where tonnage over 20 years old accounts for 22% of total segment capacity - up dramatically from just 8% five years ago. In the container sector, the 20-plus-year share has doubled to 16%, even as the newbuilding orderbook stands at more than 40% of the active trading fleet.
Across other core segments, vintage exposure remains comparatively contained: bulk carriers over 20 years old represent 12% of the fleet, while LNG carriers stand at 10%.
Lucrative Operational Returns Dampen Demolition Incentives
With trading returns remaining exceptionally strong, the commercial case for scrapping pales in comparison to sustained operational employment. Although scrap steel prices across the Indian Subcontinent have appreciated by 20% to 25% since early 2026, the pull of the freight market remains dominant. Demonstrating this strength, the benchmark ClarkSea Index touched a new record of $84,951/day late last week, reinforcing the incentive to keep older assets trading.
According to Clarksons' latest demolition market update, total scrap sales year-to-date (YTD) have reached just 8.4 million DWT. Buying appetite remains firm across yards in Bangladesh and Pakistan, whereas Indian recyclers continue to prioritize specialized, green-certified (HKC-compliant) tonnage.
Commenting on prevailing market sentiment in its latest weekly intelligence circular, leading cash buyer GMS observed: "The final quarter is … developing into a contest of patience. Recyclers have the capacity and willingness to buy, but owners still have freight earnings, secondhand alternatives and time on their side."
The swelling pool of vintage vessels represents a substantial reservoir of pent-up scrap supply for future quarters, particularly whenever charter earnings eventually soften and demolition prices offer more attractive residual asset valuations. However, the eventual pace of demolition will hinge heavily on freight market trajectories, secondhand asset prices, light displacement tonnage (LDT) scrap valuations, and regulatory compliance conditions across major recycling destinations.
