Sea-Intelligence: Hormuz and Red Sea Crises Disrupt Global Supply Chains in Two Fundamentally Different Ways

A new report from Sea-Intelligence has revealed the stark operational differences between the Red Sea crisis and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, showing how a localized maritime blockade can rapidly trigger ripple effects across global ports and supply chains.

In the latest edition of its Sunday Spotlight series, Sea-Intelligence published an in-depth analysis of the operational impact stemming from today’s two most critical maritime hotspots: the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the organization, although both are considered geopolitical chokepoints capable of disrupting global supply chains, the two crises have produced fundamentally different consequences for the container shipping industry.

Red Sea Crisis Erodes Global Schedule Reliability

At the broader market level, the Red Sea crisis has directly undermined schedule reliability across global liner networks.

The rerouting of container vessels around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Red Sea has significantly extended transit times, disrupted sailing schedules, and reduced fleet utilization efficiency.

According to Sea-Intelligence, this type of disruption primarily results in longer voyage durations, where supply chains continue operating but with reduced vessel rotation efficiency and substantially higher operating costs.

Hormuz Disruptions Trigger a “Volume Shock” Rather Than Global Paralysis

In contrast, the impact of the Strait of Hormuz disruptions has been fundamentally different in nature.

Sea-Intelligence noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have so far not caused any significant deterioration in global vessel schedule reliability. In fact, during March 2026, global schedule reliability improved by 3.9 percentage points compared to the previous period, even surpassing typical pre-pandemic seasonal levels.

According to the analysis, the key difference lies in how carriers responded to the crisis.

Unlike the Red Sea situation - where vessels could still reroute around the affected area - a blockade in Hormuz effectively eliminated access to parts of the Middle East for several shipping services. Instead of waiting offshore or extending voyage times, carriers proactively suspended portions of their service networks connected to the affected region altogether.

This led to a sharp decline in vessel calls across the Middle East while simultaneously creating a “volume shock” at transshipment hubs outside the region.

Congestion Pressure Shifts from Sea Lanes to Transshipment Ports

According to Sea-Intelligence, the most severe consequence of the Hormuz crisis has not occurred at sea, but rather at land-based logistics hubs.

Shipping lines were forced to urgently discharge cargo originally destined for the Middle East at alternative transshipment ports, including hubs along India’s West Coast and the Port of Colombo.

The sudden and unplanned surge in container volumes quickly placed heavy pressure on container yards, warehousing capacity, and cargo-handling infrastructure at these ports.

Sea-Intelligence believes this is precisely what created “land-side bottlenecks,” causing delays and schedule instability to spread even to trade lanes that are not directly connected to the Middle East but rely on the same transshipment hubs.

Global Supply Chains Are Becoming Increasingly Vulnerable

The analysis from Sea-Intelligence highlights a critical reality of today’s logistics industry: the impact of maritime chokepoints is no longer confined to the immediate conflict zone.

A localized disruption can now rapidly escalate into widespread port capacity shortages, container congestion, and schedule disruptions due to the growing interconnectedness of global transport networks.

The situation also underscores the heavy dependence of modern supply chains on strategic transshipment hubs, where even a single abnormal cargo surge can trigger cascading effects across multiple international shipping routes.
