Port of New York and New Jersey Retains Title as Second Busiest US Port for Container Volume in 2025

The Port of New York and New Jersey has officially concluded 2025 holding the title of the second-busiest port in the United States for loaded containers.

Total container throughput for the year hit the 8.9 million TEU mark. Broadly speaking, import volumes and overall throughput remained stable, while the primary growth drivers were the export sector and rail traffic.

December: A Year-End Slowdown

December figures revealed a slight dip compared to the same period last year. Total monthly throughput fell by 5.2% year-on-year, settling at 652,471 TEUs.

Specifically:

•    Imports: Decreased by 5.4% to 329,914 TEUs.

•    Exports: Declined by 6.3% to 105,438 TEUs.

Full Year 2025: Steady Growth

Despite the contraction in the final month, the overall picture for 2025 remained positive.

•    Imports: Rose slightly by 1.7%, totaling 4.51 million TEUs.

•    Exports: Posted impressive growth of 6.5%, reaching 1.44 million TEUs.

Rail Surge vs. Auto Slump

The most notable highlight in this year's report is the robust growth in rail volumes.

•    Rail traffic in December jumped 12.8%, reaching 55,113 containers.

•    For the full year, rail transport volume increased by 12.4% compared to 2024.

Conversely, the auto volumes sector faced significant headwinds. The port handled 36,099 vehicles in December, dragging the total annual vehicle throughput for 2025 down by 11% year-on-year.
