Port of Hamburg Intensifies Strategic Cooperation with India Following EU-India Free Trade Agreement

Representatives from the Port of Hamburg and the German maritime industry are placing a strategic focus on deepening partnerships and enhancing dialogue with counterparts in Chennai and Mumbai. In New Delhi, high-level discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, alongside Invest India, have significantly bolstered bilateral relations.

Cooperation Context and Sustainable Development Vision

Against the backdrop of the ongoing implementation of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Hamburg delegation emphasized the necessity of diversifying trade relations while highlighting India’s ascending role as a premier trade partner.

During a series of top-level meetings with the Mumbai Port Authority, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the Indian Ports Association, and regional representatives from the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), discussions centered on the exchange of strategies for climate-neutral port development.

The Hamburg delegation shared practical expertise, including lessons learned from the implementation of shore power systems for sea-going vessels. Beyond technical presentations, a high-level panel discussion focused on the long-term strategic direction of maritime infrastructure, encompassing the transformation of port areas and the expansion of cruise terminals.

Record Growth in Cargo Volumes

India has emerged as one of the Port of Hamburg’s most vital trade partners. Between 2020 and 2024, container throughput in direct trade with India grew by 21%.

This positive trajectory surged in 2025. By the end of the year, India had risen to 6th place among Hamburg’s most important partner nations in terms of maritime container volume.

Commenting on this robust growth, Hendrik Meyn, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing, stated:

"The Port of Hamburg recorded a new record volume of 290,000 TEU in direct trade with India in 2025. This represents an impressive growth of nearly 50% over the previous year and clearly demonstrates the dynamic development of trade with the subcontinent."

A Diversified Maritime Connectivity Network

The Port of Hamburg is currently linked to India via 12 regular liner services, comprising:

●    6 container services

●    3 RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) services

●    3 conventional general cargo services, which include specialized handling for heavy-lift cargo.

The bustling metropolis on the Elbe maintains direct maritime links with a wide array of major Indian ports, including Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Mumbai, Chennai, Ennore, and Hazira.
