Malaysia Urgently Rolls Out Support for Exporters Amid Middle East Crisis

On Thursday, Malaysia's trade agency officially announced strategic measures to safeguard the nation's export operations amid the ever-escalating geopolitical tensions driven by military conflicts in the Middle East.

Recommendations for Rerouting and Untangling the Supply Chain

According to the official statement, the agency is actively encouraging Malaysian exporters to reroute and diversify their trade flows. The core objective is to provide timely assistance to help businesses navigate maritime blockades, skyrocketing logistics costs, and supply chain ruptures.

Specifically, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) is guiding exporters to divert their shipments to alternative, low-risk ports of entry within the Middle East. Recommended safe-haven options include the Port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or the Port of Salalah in Oman.

Market Diversification Strategy and Leveraging FTAs

Rather than focusing solely on a volatile region, the agency is also accelerating plans to support Malaysian enterprises in expanding into regions less affected by the conflict. New target markets include South Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Simultaneously, boosting intra-bloc trade among neighboring Southeast Asian (ASEAN) nations is being heavily emphasized.

To alleviate the burden of freight costs, the trade agency noted that Malaysian exporters have full access to preferential tariff regimes. Maximizing the use of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that Malaysia has signed will yield significant duty savings, partially offsetting the escalating logistics costs.

Commitment to Frontline Support

Highlighting the government's proactive stance in standing alongside businesses to weather the storm, Reezal Merican, Chairman of MATRADE, affirmed: "While the closure of critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz tests our agility, we are empowering our offices in Dubai, Jeddah, and Cairo to act as frontline support centres for every Malaysian exporter in need."
