Maersk Adjusts Fuel Surcharges for Inland Transport Services Across Multiple European Markets

Maersk has announced an update to its Intermodal Fuel Fee (EFS/IFS), the fuel surcharge applied to inland transportation and intermodal transport services, across multiple European markets. The adjustment comes as global energy prices continue to fluctuate amid heightened security tensions in the Middle East.

According to Maersk, the surcharge revision is intended to offset rising fuel costs while ensuring the continued reliability and stability of its inland and intermodal transport services throughout the region.

The carrier also noted that approximately 20% of the world's oil supply transits the Strait of Hormuz, meaning that any disruption to security in the region can have a direct impact on transportation and logistics costs worldwide.

Effective from July 20 to August 3, 2026

The revised surcharge schedule will apply from July 20 through August 3, 2026, and will be reviewed and updated every two weeks, depending on developments in the energy market.

Maersk has announced the following surcharge levels:

DACH Region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland)

●    Truck: 4%

●    Barge and BCO: 4%

●    RCO: 2%

Benelux Region (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg)

●    Truck: 5%

●    Barge and BCO: 5%

●    RCO: 2.5%

Poland

●    Truck: 4%

●    RCO: 2%

According to Maersk, these surcharge rates will apply to the corresponding IHI/IHE inland transportation charges.

Fuel Surcharges to Be Reviewed Every Two Weeks

Maersk stated that the Intermodal Fuel Fee is a variable surcharge linked to fuel price movements and will continue to be reviewed on a biweekly basis to ensure it accurately reflects prevailing market conditions.

For shipments not regulated by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), the applicable surcharge will be determined based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD). For shipments subject to FMC regulations, the revised surcharge schedule will take effect on August 18, 2026.

Maersk's latest adjustment highlights how ocean carriers and logistics service providers continue to proactively update their pricing policies in response to energy market volatility and ongoing geopolitical risks that are placing sustained pressure on global supply chains.
