Hapag-Lloyd and India Establish a Strategic Maritime Cooperation Framework

Hapag-Lloyd and the Indian government have officially signed three Letters of Intent (LOIs) aimed at deepening their maritime partnership and supporting the robust growth of the shipping and logistics sector within the country.

Vessel Re-flagging Plan and High-Standard Ship Recycling Ecosystem

Under this new partnership framework, the shipping group plans to explore the re-flagging of up to four vessels to the Indian national registry. According to the company, any such transition will remain contingent upon commercial evaluations and regulatory requirements.

A separate initiative focuses on creating a ship recycling ecosystem in India, projected to offer a dismantling capacity of up to 100 vessels. Officials emphasized that this project is designed to ensure that end-of-life vessels are processed at facilities that are fully compliant with international safety standards.

Seaport Development Cooperation Framework

The agreements also outline a strategic cooperation framework for the development of Vadhavan Port, to be executed through a partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).

This move underscores Hapag-Lloyd's robust commitment to putting down deeper roots within the critical port infrastructure of one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Current Footprint and 2030 Vision

Assessing its current operational capacity, Hapag-Lloyd highlighted that it currently maintains six dedicated liner services in the Indian market, connecting the nation directly to global trade hubs. Notably, the ocean carrier has also made a strategic capital injection into JM Baxi Ports and Logistics—a terminal operator currently handling cargo volumes of approximately 3.2 million TEUs annually.

Looking toward the future, Hapag-Lloyd affirmed its ambitious target to further boost its handled cargo volume in this region to approximately 3 million TEUs by 2030.
