EUNAVFOR ASPIDES Warning: Threat of Attacks on Commercial Shipping in the Red Sea Shows Signs of Escalation

The European Union naval force EUNAVFOR ASPIDES has issued an urgent advisory to the shipping industry, highlighting the resurgence and escalating severity of threats to commercial vessels in the Red Sea and adjacent waters, driven by mounting regional tensions.

According to the latest assessment, the period of relative calm recorded since late 2025 may be coming to an end. Houthi forces have resumed firing missiles at Israel as of March 28, 2026, signaling a potential return to targeting commercial shipping operations.

The advisory notes that, although no attacks targeting commercial vessels have been recorded since September 2025, the complex developments of the conflict involving Iran, the US, Israel, and regional proxies are elevating risks across key maritime corridors.

EUNAVFOR ASPIDES warns that the next phase of Houthi intervention could include renewed attacks targeting vessels transiting the Red Sea and the eastern Gulf of Aden - areas well within the range of their weapon systems.

Threat Level Classification and Routing Recommendations

The current threat level is assessed as "moderate" for vessels with no affiliations to Israel or the US, and as "high" for vessels or companies with ties to Israel, encompassing ownership, flag of registry, or scheduled port calls.

The task force emphasized that the Houthis' military capabilities remain "intact and significant," further exacerbating concerns over the risk of a regional escalation.

Shipping companies with links to Israel or the US are strongly advised to avoid transiting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden until the situation stabilizes. Other vessels are encouraged to continue submitting requests for support through official maritime security channels.

Simultaneously, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES noted that enhanced protective measures are being deployed, which could result in longer waiting times for vessels requesting close protection escorts due to limited military resources.

Operationally, vessel operators are advised to avoid entering Yemeni territorial waters, consider routing closer to the African coastline where feasible, and maintain continuous communication with maritime authorities such as the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa (MSCHOA).
