The port of Shanghai - the world's largest container port - ramped up operations to regain lost volume during the two-month lockdown and reopened earlier this month. Shanghai's average daily container throughput has recovered to 126,000 TEUs, or 95% of pre-lockdown levels.

Output on June 18 alone hit a one-day high of 142,500 TEUs. The figures were released by China's Ministry of Transport at a press conference on June 27.

Cai Tuanjie, general manager of the transportation service department of China's Ministry of Transport, said that all departments of the ministry are working with the authorities in Shanghai and neighboring provinces to accelerate work and production in logistics and transportation sectors.

Speaking at the same meeting, Vice Minister Zhao Chongjiu said, "It’s expected that in the first half of this year, the national railway, water transport, and postal freight volume will exceed the level of the same period in 2019 (the year before Covid-19 hit).”

Although trucking capacity was limited due to Covid-19 testing during the lockdown, Zhao said this has improved.

He noted: “The current national transportation network is generally smooth, the national highways and port waterways remain unblocked, and there are no temporarily closed expressway toll stations and service areas."

Zhao added that on June 24, truck traffic on the highway reached 7.48 million, an increase of 18.3% year-on-year in 2019.

Container throughput at China's main ports also increased by more than 2% year-on-year in the first six months of 2022, reaching 124 million TEUs.

Cai said it will work to improve the efficiency of seaport and railway loading and unloading as well as customs clearance in key regions, such as the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta.
