CMA CGM Introduces Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on China–West Africa Trade

CMA CGM has announced the introduction of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for cargo moving from China to destinations across West Africa.

According to the carrier, the new surcharge took effect on June 15, 2026, and applies to both dry cargo and reefer cargo transported under short-term contracts.

Details of the surcharge by destination region are outlined below:

1. West Africa Central

For destinations in Central West Africa, CMA CGM has introduced the following PSS levels:

●    Shipments to Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Equatorial Guinea are subject to a PSS of USD 750 per TEU.

●    Togo will face the highest surcharge under this adjustment, at USD 850 per TEU.

●    Cargo destined for Ghana will be subject to a PSS of USD 650 per TEU.

2. West Africa North

In the North West Africa region, surcharge levels are lower than those applied in Central West Africa.

●    A PSS of USD 350 per TEU will apply to shipments bound for Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé & Príncipe.

●    Cargo destined for Gambia will be subject to a higher surcharge of USD 600 per TEU.

Exception for Guinea

In the same announcement, CMA CGM stated that the Peak Season Surcharge will not apply to cargo shipped from China to Guinea.

According to the carrier, the implementation of the PSS is intended to support service reliability and ensure stable operational capacity on the China–West Africa trade lane amid continued growth in transportation demand.
