China's major container ports saw a 9.1% increase in volume last week

Chinese ports are returning to normal after the outbreak of the Corona virus (COVID-19) and last week saw a 9.1% jump in container volumes, however, the number of large shipments reduction.

Last week saw a continued positive trend in volume at China's largest container ports.

According to the China Seaport Association, during the week of March 2 - 8, container throughput of eight major container ports increased by 9.1%. Among them, the growth rates of Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao and Guangzhou increased by 10%. Overall growth of the Bohai Rim area ports is faster than other coastal ports.

While container volumes have increased, volumes of crude oil and iron ore at major ports of loading and unload decreased last week.

In addition to the ports in Hubei, the epicenter of the virus outbreak, other ports along the Yangtze River have returned to normal operation. Cargo volume of the three major ports in the Yangtze, Nanjing, Wuhan (in Hubei) and Chongqing rivers increased by 7.7%, while container volume increased by 16.1%.

Currently, Hubei ports are recovering slowly and facing a shortage of staff and workers. Employees are primarily engaged in services related to disease prevention and supply of medical equipment, and logistics services to manufacturing companies.

However, the recovery of China's container output now faces demand impacts from the spread of the pandemic to Europe and the US.
