Port of Oakland Signals Recovery as September Container Throughput Rises 5.4%

The Port of Oakland recorded container throughput of 188,517 TEU in September 2026, a 5.4% increase from September 2025. The result was supported by growth in both inbound and outbound container volumes.

Import and Export Container Volumes Both Increase

In September, total loaded container volume rose 7.7% year on year. Loaded imports reached 82,975 TEU, up 9.6%, reversing the declines recorded in July and August.

On the export side, loaded container volume reached 63,299 TEU, an increase of 5.3% compared with September 2025. According to the draft, this also marked the third consecutive month of month-on-month growth in export volume.

Meanwhile, empty container throughput totaled 42,243 TEU, down 2.0% year on year. The port recorded 88 vessel calls, an increase of 7.3% from September 2025.

Compared with August 2026, total container throughput rose 8.5% in September, indicating an improvement in port activity during the month.

Cumulative Throughput Remains Down for the First Nine Months

Despite the encouraging September results, the port's cumulative throughput remained below the level recorded a year earlier. During the first nine months of 2026, the Port of Oakland handled a total of 1,656,999 TEU, down 3.5% year on year.

Cumulative loaded import volume reached 706,177 TEU, a decline of 3.1%. By contrast, loaded export volume increased 0.7% to 590,434 TEU.

Overall, cumulative loaded container volume fell 1.4%, while empty container throughput declined 10.4% compared with the same period in 2025.

Port of Oakland Continues to Strengthen Its Competitiveness

Jason Garben, Acting Maritime Director at the Port of Oakland, described the September results as an encouraging sign, particularly given the increase in both import and export container volumes.

Garben said the port would continue to focus on delivering reliable and efficient operations while working closely with terminal operators and ocean carriers. The goal is to maintain the Port of Oakland's competitiveness and attract additional cargo volumes in the period ahead.
