Rotterdam World Gateway Completes €500 Million Financing for Expansion Project

Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) has completed a new financing package for the final phase of its €500 million container terminal expansion project at Maasvlakte 2, in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

RWG’s Largest Financing Package to Date

The financing package comprises senior debt and junior debt, with Société Générale acting as the sole private placement agent for the transaction.

According to Clifford Chance, RWG’s legal adviser, the transaction represents the largest financing raised by the terminal operator to date. The financing structure combines a senior US private placement with a private credit subordinated tranche.

The proceeds will be used to fund the final phase of RWG’s expansion, with a key focus on constructing a fourth deepwater berth, which will also be the final berth included in the port’s current expansion plan.

Targeting 5 Million TEU in Annual Capacity

RWG currently has an annual handling capacity of approximately 2.6 million TEU. Once the entire expansion project is completed, terminal capacity is expected to increase to 5 million TEU per year, strengthening RWG’s role within the Port of Rotterdam cluster and the Northern European container shipping network.

The fourth berth will be designed to accommodate and handle the largest container vessels currently in operation.

The €500 million expansion project will also include the addition of:

●    5 quay cranes;

●    11 yard modules, equipped with a total of 22 automated stacking cranes (ASCs);

●    24 automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

RWG is also assessing the feasibility of a BoxBay system, with a capacity of approximately 30,000 TEU, for empty container storage.

Other investment components include expanding charging capacity for electric equipment, increasing gate capacity, upgrading maintenance facilities, office areas and storage facilities for non-standard cargo.

Expanding Capacity to Meet Growing Operational Demand

RWG expects to bring the additional capacity from the final expansion phase into commercial operation before 2030.

According to Société Générale, the project will not only support RWG’s long-term growth plans but also help ease operational pressure at the Port of Rotterdam as demand for container terminal capacity continues to increase.

Enrico Douwens, CFO of RWG, said: “We’re pleased to announce the acceleration of the ongoing expansion of the capacity of our container terminal on Maasvlakte 2, marking another key milestone in the company’s growth.”

According to Douwens, the financing structure arranged by Société Générale meets the requirements of the parties involved in the transaction.

The plan follows RWG’s announcement in August that it would accelerate the final phase of its Maasvlakte 2 expansion project. This phase will be carried out in parallel with the expansion of the third berth, which is expected to enter commercial operation in 2027.

Once the entire project is completed, RWG will operate at 100% of the berth capacity allocated by the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
