OOCL orders five mega container ships

OOCL has signed a new shipbuilding contract with the shipbuilding engineering factories COSCO Nantong (NACKS) and the shipbuilding engineering factory KHI COSCO Dalian (DACKS) for five new container ships, at a cost of is 155.68 million USD for each vessel with a nominal capacity of 23,000TEU.

The Hong Kong-based company is expected to begin receiving these ships in 2023. These five new vessels are part of OOCL's ongoing program to introduce large, modern and fuel-efficient vessels to further strengthen the fleet's competitiveness as well as rebalance its fleet.

Currently, OOCL has six ultra-large G-Class vessels, each with a capacity of about 21,000TEU. These ships were ordered in March 2015, the first step in expanding OOCL with this large vessel for the Asia-Europe trade.

The original plan at that time was to order a second batch of five to six large ships. However, the addition to the original order did not occur, due to some difficulties, such as market conditions in 2016.

OOCL said, “to balance this expansion, in the next five years, we plan to return or liquidate 13 vessels from our fleet, totaling approximately 76,000TEU, after our long-term service. our group succeeds."
