Major ports in China achieve nearly 70 million TEUs in Q1 2023

During the same period, the total cargo volume of Chinese ports increased to more than 3.8 billion tons, achieving a growth of 6.2% year-on-year.

The following chart shows cargo volune and container throughput data for 12 major ports in China in Q1 2023.

The port of Shanghai remains the country's busiest port with 11.47 million TEUs, although container throughput is down year-on-year, according to data from China's Ministry of Transport.

Ningbo & Zhoushan Port is the second largest container port in China with 8.19 million TEUs, an increase of 3.5% year-on-year. In third place, is the port of Shenzhen with 6.17 million TEU, however with a decrease of 4.9% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the largest percentage growth was recorded at the ports of Dalian, Yinkou and Rizao. Dalian marked an annual container growth of 19.7%, Yinkou saw a 16.9% increase and Rizao saw a 15.8% increase in TEU throughput.

On the other hand, Shanghai and Shenzhen are the only ports with a drop in container throughput. Shanghai reported a 6.4% drop in container volume, while the port of Shenzhen showed a 4.9% drop in container throughput.
