The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has decided to withdraw the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping's (RMRS) ongoing membership of IACS, due to Russian attack in Ukraine.
IACS said in its statement: "As such, and under the terms of its Charter which requires agreement from 75% or more of its members, IACS Council has therefore adopted a resolution that the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping’s membership of IACS is withdrawn with immediate effect."
"Following the recent, tragic developments in Ukraine and resulting actions taken by governments and other entities worldwide including, in particular, sanctions in the UK where IACS is domiciled, IACS Council has been continuously reviewing the developing sanctions landscape to ensure it complies fully with all legal requirements," stated IACS.
"As part of that ongoing evaluation, and following the receipt of external legal advice, IACS Council today agreed that the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping’s (RMRS) ongoing membership of IACS is no longer tenable," added IACS.
IACS added that it deeply regrets the circumstances that led to this decision and hopes that hostilities in Ukraine will be stopped as soon as possible.
IACS is a not-for-profit membership association of registry organizations that establishes minimum standards and specifications to address marine safety and environmental protection and ensure compliance. IACS fulfills this responsibility through executive boards, expert groups and project teams and provides a Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS) that its Members comply with, as a guarantee of professionalism and maintaining high professional standards. IACS is recognized as the main technical advisor of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
