Hormuz Crisis: 10% of Global Container Fleet Stranded, Risking Severe Supply Chain Disruption

Escalating geopolitical tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran are sending massive shockwaves through the global shipping network. At the TPM26 container shipping conference hosted by S&P Global Market Intelligence in Long Beach this past Monday, Jeremy Nixon, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ONE, delivered alarming figures regarding the bottleneck at the Strait of Hormuz.
Around 100 Container Ships "Stranded"
According to statistics, up to 100 container ships are among the 750 commercial vessels currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz area. Addressing the event, Mr. Nixon assessed the severity of the crisis on transport capacity: "About 10% of the container ship global fleet is caught up in this."
Security Risks and Marine Insurance Shock
The maritime security situation in the region is currently on red alert. Marine insurers have officially halted coverage for voyages through this vital chokepoint between Iran and Oman. This route transports approximately one-fifth of global oil consumption as well as a massive volume of natural gas.
Tensions were pushed to a climax when the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared on state television on Monday that any ship attempting to pass through the strait would be burned in retaliation for the airstrikes.
Domino Effect on Global Transshipment Hubs
The consequences of the blockade do not stop in the Middle East. The supply chain will face widespread aftershocks as cargo flows become gridlocked. Nixon warned of a worst-case scenario at shipping hubs and key ports in both Europe and Asia: "All of that cargo is going to start backing up."
To mitigate risks, ONE, alongside competitors like top-tier carrier MSC, has had to make an emergency decision: completely halting all cargo bookings to the Middle East region.
Warnings of Sudden Energy Price Spikes
Beyond the logistics sector, transport and energy industry experts are concurrently warning that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz will cause crude oil prices to skyrocket. Highlighting this macroeconomic risk, Nixon concluded: "That would create a big energy spike."
