DHL Group Expands Air Cold Chain Network: A Strategic Leap in Global Healthcare Logistics

To meet the increasingly stringent logistics requirements of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and healthcare corporations, DHL Group recently unveiled key advancements in its Life Sciences & Healthcare (LSH) storage and transportation capabilities.
This expansion of its dedicated Air Cold Chain Network is set to redefine the global distribution of temperature-sensitive medications, vaccines, and pharmaceutical products, as well as cell and gene therapies. It serves as a cornerstone of DHL's €2 billion strategic investment into "DHL Health Logistics," providing customers with comprehensive end-to-end visibility for high-sensitivity medical shipments.
A Strategic Vision Shaping the Future of Supply Chains
Current market shifts are challenging healthcare enterprises to balance quality with operational costs. Addressing this, Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight, stated:
“Life sciences and healthcare companies expect reliable, compliant, and transparent end-to-end cold chain solutions - and those expectations are rising fast. At the same time, they are looking to simplify their supply chains and reduce costs. Our expanded network combines DHL Aviation’s global air connectivity, our network of GDP-compliant stations, and major investments in state-of-the-art temperature-controlled facilities. The result is a more resilient and efficient logistics platform for customers who depend on flawless quality to deliver critical therapies to patients.”
Enhancing Flexibility and Global Standards Compliance
By reducing reliance on third-party carriers and commercial airlines, DHL is significantly improving product integrity and temperature control throughout the journey. This move also bolsters supply chain resilience against geopolitical tensions, capacity shortages, and growing regulatory complexities.
The network adds dedicated capacity for temperature-sensitive medical shipments and connects key markets through more than 30 GDP (Good Distribution Practice) compliant aviation hubs.
The Strategic BRU–CVG Corridor and Expansion Plans
In its initial phase, the network will link DHL’s major hubs, most notably the Brussels (BRU) – Cincinnati (CVG) route. Key advantages of this corridor include:
● Direct Connectivity: Linking the U.S. Midwest - a major pharmaceutical cluster - with one of Europe’s most advanced life sciences ecosystems.
● Bypassing Congestion: Avoiding coastal bottlenecks to create a seamless, strictly temperature-controlled route for high-value biologicals.
● Clinical-Grade Integrity: Supported by 45,000 square meters of dedicated "pharma-only zones" at BRUcargo, ensuring uncompromising quality from start to finish.
Looking ahead, DHL will continue to prioritize network expansion in key markets, including India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, the United States, Germany, and Ireland.
Operational Optimization with a Dedicated Fleet
With patient safety at its core, DHL aims to provide a cost-optimized service that places quality above all else. The new network minimizes the need for heavy, expensive specialized packaging and active cold-storage containers, thereby significantly reducing the risk of temperature excursions.
To support this network, DHL has deployed a dedicated Boeing 777 freighter on the Brussels–Cincinnati route. Bearing the new "DHL Health Logistics" livery, the aircraft is not only a symbol of the company's strategic focus but also provides stable, controlled capacity on one of the world's most vital pharmaceutical trade lanes.
