Deployed Capacity on Asia–US and Asia–Europe Trades Hits Record Highs Over Golden Week 2026
.webp)
The latest market intelligence report from maritime consultancy Sea-Intelligence (cited by The Loadstar) reveals a striking dynamic unfolding across container shipping: nominal capacity deployed across core Transpacific and Asia–Europe arterial trades reached historic peaks during the 2026 Golden Week holiday period. Notably, the Asia–US West Coast trade recorded weekly deployed capacity of 393,000 TEU, well above historical baselines that typically remain capped beneath the 300,000-TEU threshold.
Importantly, this metric tracks vessel capacity offered by ocean carriers on these loops rather than actual lifted container volumes or cargo throughput. Under Sea-Intelligence's methodology, this year's Golden Week evaluation window spans Weeks 40 through 42.
Capacity Influx Defies Typical Q3 Trends
When benchmarked against the remainder of Q3/2026, vessel capacity injected during Golden Week rose by 18% on the Asia–Mediterranean trade and 15% on the Asia–US East Coast route. Both the Asia–US West Coast and Asia–Northern Europe corridors likewise recorded concurrent 4% increases.
This 2026 capacity trajectory stands in sharp contrast to pre-pandemic seasonal norms documented between 2012 and 2019. Historically, carriers consistently curtailed deployed capacity during Golden Week: cutting supply by an average of 8% on Asia–US West Coast, 6% on Asia–US East Coast, 16% on Asia–Northern Europe, and a substantial 21% on Asia–Mediterranean trades.
Proliferation of "Double Sailings" Undermines Blank Sailing Programs
A primary catalyst behind this lingering capacity overhang has been the sharp uptick in "double sailings." Sea-Intelligence defines a double sailing as an occurrence where two vessels depart under the same liner service rotation within a single calendar week.
According to the analysis, the heavy concentration of double sailings during Golden Week 2026 significantly blunted the efficacy of scheduled blank (canceled) sailings - a core capacity-management mechanism conventionally deployed by ocean alliances to rein in vessel supply and safeguard freight rate baselines during seasonal lulls. The widening disconnect between this massive wave of deployed tonnage and actual cargo demand is poised to inject downward volatility into freight rate levels over the coming weeks.
