Today, September 26, 2022, MSC announced that it has signed an agreement with Atlas Air for four new Boeing 777-200F freighters under a long-term contract. The first one will be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year.

MSC Air Cargo has been in development for several months and the new solution will be available to the market in early 2023, following the delivery of the first of four MSC-branded Boeing 777-200F aircraft. The aircraft will be operated by Atlas Air, a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc.

MSC's new air cargo strategy will bring confidence to the market following the appointment of Jannie Davel as its air freight leader. Observers had been suspicious of both Maersk and CMA CGM's lack of experience in aviation operations.

Mr. Jannie Davel previously worked at Delta Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo and DHL in charge of air cargo business development and team building.

Mr. Davel has joined Delta Cargo as MD commercial. He has also headed Emirates SkyCargo's Americas operations and was also the head of DHL's air freight division in the Americas and the United States. MSC is expected to develop routes to the US market.

MSC says its entry into the air freight sector is to meet customer needs and as a complement to its container shipping solutions.

MSC CEO Soren Toft said: “We are delighted to announce the development of MSC Air Cargo and to welcome Jannie Davel to spearhead this exciting new offering for MSC clients. This is our first step into this market and we plan to continue exploring various avenues to develop air cargo in a way that complements our core business of container shipping.”
