The incident happened on April 14 when the container ship Haian City was on its way from the port of Chittagong, Bangladesh to the port of Singapore.

The Vietnamese-flagged feeder Haian City operated by Samudera Shipping Line Ltd has lost an empty container at sea and is currently anchored in the bay, awaiting repair.

The tanker, named Orion Express, arrived at the outer moorings of Chittagong port on the afternoon of April 14 after the accident and remained anchored there.

According to port officials, the 2008 container ship needed to be repaired before it set sail, while both ships were ordered not to depart before the claims were settled.

The Mercantile Marine Department has established a two-member exploration agency led by one of its marine surveyors to investigate the incident.

The Port Authority of Chittagong deployed its salvage tug Kadari-11 along with the on-duty pilot and pollution control vessel Bay Cleaner-2 to search for the lost container, but the work was interrupted due to rough seas.

Rafique Uddin, an official with the container ship's local agent, Intermodal Pvt Ltd, told Container News that due to the inclement weather, no one was able to get close to the vessel. “The damage could not be assessed as our surveyor failed to reach the vessel due to rough weather,” he said, adding, “Our repair workshop also failed to reach there.”

The Haian City vessel needed a long time to be repaired before it could continue its journey.
