In August, the Chittagong port handled a total of 251,888TEU, a sharp increase from the 228,188TEU that passed through this central Bangladeshi port last month.

In terms of export value, in August it reached 3.38 billion USD, up 14% over the same period last year at 2.96 billion USD.

Data shows that in August, the port handled 63,392TEU laden export containers and 63,278 empty outbound boxes. At the same time, Chittagong port has handled 123,969TEU of laden import containers and 1,249TEU empty inbound boxes.

Shippers believe that container cargo volume at the port could increase further in the coming months as orders are pouring in. Bangladesh is the second largest garment exporter in the world.

Abdullah Baset, an exporter based in Gazipur, said that as the pandemic situation eases, exports are increasing rapidly and now is the peak period for commodity exports.

A Chittagong port official said: "In last fiscal year container handling by the Chittagong port was lower than the previous year due to the covid-linked disruption," he added: "But this year’s trend shows a possible significant growth compared to the previous year."
