Blank sailings increasing rapidly on the Transpacific route
As reported by Sea-Intelligence, the number of blank sailings has been increasing sharply on the Trans-Pacific services, but not so much on the Asia-North Europe route.
Sea Intelligence, with the help of the Blank Sailings Tracker, looked at how carriers responded to a drop in demand, especially for imports into North America and Europe, based on an analysis of the number of blank sailings.
The figure below shows the number of additional blank sailings that were reported (or unannounced sailings recorded by Sea-Intelligence) between week 42 and week 52.
As reported by Sea-Intelligence, the number of void sailings has increased sharply on the trans-Pacific services, but not by much in Asia- North Europe.
An additional 34 sailings have been canceled on the Asia-North America West Coast services and 16 on the Asia-North America East Coast service.
However, during weeks 51 and 52, the schedule plans of carriers on the Asia-North America West Coast services will no longer see blank sailings.
"This is a reflection of the carriers’ indecision as to how to approach the potential pre-Chinese New Year rush. It appears more to be a wait-and-see approach, in terms of whether there will be a seasonal demand spike," Alab Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence, commented.
In Asia-Europe, on the other hand, there is no similar trend, with Asia-North Europe with only 6 more blank sailings and Asia-Mediterranean with 4 more blank sailings.
