10.5% of global container fleet capacity impacted due to port congestion

According to analysis by Sea-Intelligence, as global supply chain disruptions are still ongoing, there has been a significant improvement in the number of container ships waiting to dock.

Since between January and April, the proportion of global container fleets affected by delays has decreased from 13.8% to 10.5%.

“This means that 3.3% of the global fleet has been released back into operation from January to April,” commented Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence.

While a marked improvement, it still equates to effectively cutting 10% of global capacity at a time when demand is still very high.

For road transport connecting to the port, an end-to-end congestion index calculated by Sea-Intelligence shows a significant improvement. The index has fallen from 95% at the start of this year to less than 50%, although much of the improvement has been seen in the Mediterranean rather the largest ports in North Europe.

“On a port level, distinct improvements are seen in Spain, Italy, and Greece, whereas at the other end of the scale there is not much improvement in Rotterdam and Hamburg,” said Murphy.
